electromagnetic or electronic “descalers.”

After 30+ years involved with water treatment I have yet to see any measurable effect, why?

🔹 Lack of Conclusive Scientific Evidence

There are no peer-reviewed, repeatable, double-blind studies demonstrating that electromagnetic or radio-frequency water conditioners consistently prevent or remove scale under controlled conditions.

Most of what’s available are:

  • Anecdotal reports (“customers say their kettles look cleaner”)

  • Short-term lab observations that show minor, reversible crystal changes in very specific water chemistries

  • Manufacturer-sponsored trials that lack independent verification

When independent labs (universities, water authorities, or industry bodies) have tested these systems, results have been inconsistent — sometimes a small reduction in scaling, often no measurable change at all.

🔹 Why This Happens

Electromagnetic fields can, in theory, affect crystal nucleation and growth in fluids, but:

  • The field strength is extremely weak once it passes through the pipe wall.

  • Water composition, temperature, and flow conditions vary widely.

  • Any crystal modification effect disappears within seconds once the water leaves the field.

So even if there’s a short-term effect in the lab, it usually doesn’t persist through a real plumbing or bore system.

🔹 Common Pattern in the Market

Because of that lack of measurable data, most of the “evidence” used in marketing comes from subjective client feedback:

“My pipes seem cleaner.”“The water feels softer.”“There’s less spotting on glass.”

But those are perception-based statements, not verified chemical or physical measurements.

🔹 Scientific Consensus

The general consensus among:

  • Water treatment engineers

  • Hydrogeologists

  • Corrosion and scale specialists iis that these devices are not substitutes for proven water treatment such as:

  • Ion exchange or reverse osmosis for true softening

  • Acid or biodegradable chemical cleaning (like BoreSaver Ultra C Pro) for descaling

  • Mechanical rehabilitation for blocked or biofouled bores

🔹 In summary

Electromagnetic water conditioners like CalClear produce real electrical signals, but there is no conclusive scientific evidence that these signals reliably prevent scale or remove existing deposits. Reported results are largely observational and subjective, not scientifically verified.
