How to set up a standpipe on the bore mainline

This comes up regularly with our semi rural clients so here is a guide

🧰 Equipment Needed

  • PVC standpipe assembly (typically 25–50 mm diameter, schedule 40 or 80)

  • Isolation valve (ball or gate)

  • Non-return valve (check valve)

  • Threaded or camlock coupling (for hose connection)

  • T-piece or saddle clamp for connecting into the mainline

  • Primer and solvent cement (if PVC)

  • PTFE thread seal tape

  • Pipe wrench / spanner

  • Pressure gauge (optional but recommended)

💧 Step-by-Step Setup Guide

1. Select the Installation Point

Choose a location on the bore mainline (after the borehead and check valve but before irrigation solenoids or filtration) where:

  • The pipe is accessible and straight for at least 300 mm.

  • There’s enough space for a vertical standpipe without obstruction.

2. Shut Down and Depressurize the System

Turn off the bore pump and open a downstream valve to release pressure in the line before cutting.

3. Install the T-Piece or Saddle Clamp

  • Cut the mainline cleanly at the chosen point.

  • Fit the T-piece with solvent cement (PVC) or compression fittings (poly).

  • Alternatively, install a saddle clamp with threaded outlet for smaller setups.

  • Ensure the branch points vertically upward.

4. Add the Isolation Valve

  • Thread or glue an isolation valve onto the vertical outlet.

  • This allows the standpipe to be isolated when not in use.

5. Fit the Standpipe

  • Install the vertical standpipe riser (PVC or poly).

  • The height depends on use:

    • Sampling or dosing: ~1 m high

    • Filling or flushing: ~1.2–1.5 m for ergonomic access

  • At the top, install:

    • A non-return valve if required

    • A camlock or threaded hose outlet

    • Optionally, a pressure gauge

6. Seal and Test

  • Use PTFE tape or thread sealant on all joints.

  • Allow adhesive joints to cure (15–30 min minimum).

  • Repressurize slowly and check for leaks.

7. Safety & Labeling

  • Clearly label the standpipe (“Bore Standpipe – Do Not Drink”).

  • If used for dosing (e.g., BoreSaver or chlorine), fit a backflow prevention device and comply with local water authority requirements.
